LESSONS FROM THE ROAD
FORWARD SOLUTIONS
Savannah (GA), McKinney (TX), Brookings (SD), Peoria (AZ)...
Over the last few months, our team has consulted with different organizations of various sizes and spoken at several conferences of government leaders.

In McKinney, Texas which, in 2012, ranked the 2nd Best Place to Live by Money Magazine, Patrick designed and facilitated an Advance meeting with members of the governing body and City executive team. Mayor Loughmiller, City Council members and Jason Gray, City Manager were successful in creating a unified plan to generate positive dividends from the unprecedented growth the community is experiencing.

The Mejorando Group was selected to conduct an organizational review of the Human Resource Department of the City of Savannah, Georgia. The consulting team spent several days in January launching the project and enjoying the southern hospitality Savannah offers to visitors and residents alike.
Implement Next Practices To Expedite Progress
Spring is the optimal time to refresh the focus of your organization’s workforce. Helping members have a clear line of sight between the contributions he/she makes every day with the overall performance of the organization is fundamental to success. Ensuring leaders, top to bottom, are well prepared to navigate current and future challenges, is the hallmark of credible and effective government.

Our team of consultants at the Mejorando Group partner with government leaders nationwide, helping translate the headwinds of change into a tailwind accelerating progress towards a better future. In our work we provide a range of services designed to effectively disrupt the status quo thinking of “we’ve always done it that way” and replace it with a “next practices” approach of optimizing resources, increasing employee performance and improving organizational effectiveness.

NEWS YOU CAN USE
The Next Government Workforce
Historically, government at all levels has relied on decent pay, generous benefits and stable employment to attract workers. As a result of the economic downturn, each of these attractions has been significantly diminished, leaving public leaders scrambling.

Other factors are at work, from the political pressure to be leaner and more efficient to the expansion of interest in work-life balance programs to the explosion of social media. The sum of all these moving parts is that for government to build its 21st-century workforce, old models must be discarded in favor of "next practices"— contemporary, progressive and practical strategies and tools to attract, retain and optimize talent.

Read Patrick's recent article for Governing entitled "The Next Government Workforce" that was also published by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) in the February issue of GFOA Review to learn about the four approaches government leaders should embrace or expand to translate the headwinds of disruptive change into a tailwind.

Be sure and read Patrick's articles on Governing.com including his most recent "Best Practices are the Enemy of Innovation".
